"The Games Parents Play:
How parents try to use therapists to subvert custody evaluations for financial gain"

Speaker: Monica Michell

Dr. Michell will discuss examples of how parents try to use therapists to subvert custody evaluations for financial gain, and what lawyers and financial planners can do to mitigate these manipulations. In addition, she will discuss how the appointment of a guardian ad litem can be used to protect assets when a partner is impaired by mental illness or substance abuse.

In this presentation, you will learn:

  • Benefits and pitfalls of having open communication between therapists, parent coordinators and attorneys for the child
  • Importance of planning for potential changes in income and child support
  • The value of circumscribing the child’s therapy

Dr. Monica Michell is on the faculty of the NYU Child Study Center, and the Psychoanalytic Institute at NYU. She has been the Chief of Child Psychiatry at Lenox Hill as well as the Chair of the Child Psychotherapy program at the Psychoanalytic Institute. Monica is on the Board of FamilyKind, a non-profit organization empowering and supporting families in transition due to separation or divorce and she is also a member of the National Association of Divorce Professionals (NADP).
