Divorce
and Money and Children at
2008 ADFP Annual Conference
July
is Child-Centered Divorce Month
July marks the
second annual recognition of National Child-Centered Divorce Month.
The brainchild of Rosalind Sedacca, CCT, this month is designed to
bring attention to children's emotional needs when parents separate or
divorce. According to Sedacca, "We can never overemphasize
how dramatically parental decisions about divorce can affect their
children - for years - and often for a lifetime."
Divorce
is Largely about Money and Children
Keeping this in mind, attendees at the 2008 6th annual conference
of the Association of Divorce Financial Planners will have numerous
opportunities to learn and interact with other divorce professionals
about "money and children."
To be held in New York City,
September 11th and 12th, several child-centered plenary and breakout
presentations have been incorporated into the program, which focuses on
legal, financial and emotional issues in divorce. These include:
1. A panel focusing on Divorce Issues Surrounding Children and
consisting of:
Eric Broder, a family law attorney who also serves as a Special Master
in the Family Division of the Stamford and Bridgeport, Connecticut
Superior Courts,
Diane Safran, a clinical marriage and family therapist and court
appointed expert witness using art therapy to determine signs of abuse
in children, and
Saundra Gumerove, an attorney whose practice is focused on special
needs children.
2. A separate breakout session led by attorney Gumerove focusing on
financial issues associated with Special Needs Children and Divorce, a
subject often neglected in the statutes.
3. A breakout session on Dealing with Difficult Clients in Divorce led
by Kenneth Neumann, Co-Founder and Director of Training, Center for
Mediation & Training.
According to Neumann, "In keeping with 'Child-Centered Divorce Month,'
it is important to consider using divorce professionals whose
commitment is to work with the whole family, not just advocate for an
individual client. Further, the focus on the children's well-being is
best protected when parents choose to work with a mediator/divorce
financial specialist team, thus helping create the best financial
outcome for the whole family, including maximizing the amount of money
that will be available for the children's expenses."

Where
to Find the Best Pastrami Sandwich - Another Tip for Those Planning to
Extend Their Stay in New York
Some say the Carnegie Deli is the best delicatessen in New York City -
and that's saying a lot. Lucky for you, the Carnegie Deli is also
located near the conference site as well as the New York Theatre
District: 854 7th Avenue
(55th Street).
Here are a couple of additional tips. Bring someone with you to share
your sandwich! Also, their (real New York) cheesecake, which also
should be shared, is said to be "the standard by which all others
should be judged (Zagat)." The wait staff can be entertaining and
consists largely of underemployed actors and entertainers and people
who have been there close to a million years. The place is dumpy, but
that's part of its charm.
