Breaking
News - 2008 ADFP Conference
Important
Note - Please Read: Early Registration is Running At Its Highest Rate
Ever
While we
are delighted that conference pre-registration is running at its
highest rate ever, this has resulted in a run on rooms at the Hilton.
We are keeping on top of this issue and are optimistic we will be able
to accommodate everyone, either at the Hilton or a nearby hotel.
In addition, breakout session assignments are being made on a
first-come, first served basis. We believe we will be able to
accommodate the highest priorities of most attendees. Nevertheless, we
are recommending that attendees register for the conference as early as
possible.
Where
Should Someone Go If They're Looking For a Financial Pro to Help Them
With Their Divorce?
According to this month's Newsweek magazine, the
answer is the ADFP website, www.DivorceAndFinance.org,
which also features Stacy Francis, Co-Director of Greater New York
Metropolitan (GNYM) area chapter.
Speaking of the GNYM chapter, the recent article in Investment News
covering the launch of this chapter led to chapter-building inquiries
from across the country. And speaking of chapters, we are excited that
our new Ohio
chapter will be represented at this year's conference.
An article in the August issue of FA Magazine , which is
widely distributed to the financial community in the northeast, further
highlights divorce financial planning, the ADFP and the annual
conference.
Finally, speaking of publicity, we have preliminary indications that
some members of the financial media community may be covering this
event.
An
Abridged Guide to New York
City by Carl Palatnik (blame me)
For those of you planning on extending your stay in New York City, here are some
suggestions:
1. Pick up a copy of New York Magazine (not The New Yorker). Although
it is likely you will have numerous New York
visitor publications in your hotel room, this is the best and most
comprehensive publication of its kind in New York. Aside from the event,
restaurant, etc. listings, it happens to be a great magazine.
2. Take a Walking Tour of Ground Zero.
3. Visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis
Island.
6. Visit some of New York's world
class museums (see New York Magazine for listings of current
exhibits): Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern
Art, Guggenheim, The Cloisters, Whitney,
etc., etc.
7. Take a Circle Line Cruise of the
City , a great and relaxing way to see the sights and get an
overview of the New York
and its skyline.
8. Sample a real (great) New
York pastrami, corned beef, brisket, etc.
sandwich. Some say the Carnegie Deli is the best delicatessen in New York City -
and that's saying a lot. Lucky for you, the Carnegie Deli is also
located near the conference site as well as the New York Theatre
District: 854 7th Avenue
(55th Street).
Here are a couple of additional tips. Bring someone with you to share
your sandwich! Also, their (real New York) cheesecake, which also
should be shared, is said to be "the standard by which all others
should be judged (Zagat)." The wait staff can be entertaining and
consists largely of underemployed actors and entertainers and people
who have been there close to a million years. The place is dumpy, but
that's part of its charm.
9. Get discount tickets to a Broadway show! New York City maintains TKTS Discount
Booths offering same day tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals
and plays at up to 50% off. With dozens of productions on sale every
day, there's usually something for everyone! The Times
Square location (near the conference location) is the
Marriott Marquis Hotel at West
46th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue.
Hours for evening performances are Monday - Saturday: 3pm - 8pm and
Sunday: 3 pm until one-half hour before the last curtain time being
held. Hours for matinee performances are Wednesdays and Saturday: 10
am - 2 pm. Please note: no evening tickets are sold from 10 am - 2 pm
at Times Square. The lines for obtaining these tickets are often
long. For those wishing to purchase tickets for next day matinee
performances, there is also a TKTS booth at South Street Seaport, which
houses a world-class maritime museum, breathtaking views and more than
100 shops, cafes and restaurants. This renovated American landmark is
on Lower Manhattan's historic
waterfront.
10. Travel through Space. If you are planning to spend a few extra
days in New York, you may want to
visit the Rose Center for Earth and Space in the new Hayden
Planetarium at the American
Museum
of Natural History. The Museum is a relatively short walk from the
Hilton Hotel, on the west side of Central Park.
There you can see Cosmic Collisions .
This "breathtaking Space Show [narrated by Robert Redford] launches
visitors on a thrilling trip through space and time to explore cosmic
collisions, hypersonic impacts that drive the dynamic and continuing
evolution of the universe. The new Hayden Planetarium is unlike any
other such facility in the world. In the top half of the Hayden Sphere
[is] the most technologically advanced Space Theater in existence
[creating] shows of unparalleled sophistication, realism, and
excitement. With this high-definition system, the Hayden Planetarium is
the largest and most powerful virtual reality simulator in the world."
While there is much more to do at the American
Museum of
Natural History, you might also enjoy a fall stroll through Central Park and perhaps even have lunch at the
famed Tavern on the Green.
